Welcome to the Seneca County Genealogical Society

The Seneca County Genealogical Society is an active chapter of OGS, with many talented and knowledgeable members who volunteer to assist researchers at all levels. Our members cover a wide range of ages and interest from beginners to advanced, including students from the high school genealogy club, as well as older adults who have been doing genealogical research for a long time. We specialize in Seneca County, Ohio, research but we can also help with other research needs.
Our meetings are on the first Tuesday each month, except for July, August, and December, and you do not need to be a member to attend. All are welcome to join us to hear some great speakers! You can also read about up-coming SCGS events and see other genealogy-related announcements on our FACEBOOK page. You can follow us on TWITTER, too!
Please CONTACT US anytime, or you can email me directly with your questions and comments. We look forward to connecting with you and helping you with your genealogical journey!

Past Meetings October 24, 2019 - Thursday - 10:00 a.m. Bonus Meeting - Visit the Seneca County Probate Court! Summary of Visit Judge Jay Meyer introduced himself to members of the Seneca County Genealogical Society on Thursday, October 24 in his courtroom setting. He used genealogical terms in describing his family pedigree beginning with his grandparents, Walter and Glenna Meyer, who owned and operated the Meyer Drug Store in Tiffin. Jay's father, Jerry, served a long tenure as Juvenile Court Judge. Jay himself assumed the position in 2008. He outlined his many and varied responsibilities in his role as judge. He also asked our group of about twenty to introduce themselves and their connection with genealogy. Judge Meyer then introduced his vital assistant, Dana Panuto Eborg, who distributed and discussed an informative pamphlet detailing the types and locations of records maintained by Probate Court. We then toured the behind-the-scenes chambers of the judges ending the tour in the Genealogy Room, which is open to the public. Dana displayed three volumes of Naturalization records which have been digitized by the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library. These can be accessed through Ohio Memory digital library. They also pointed out two refurbished tables which had been in the original Seneca County Courthouse. An added bonus was having John Huss, the architect who designed the building, as part of our group. For additional information see Court’s website http://www.senecajpcourt.com/prbGenealogy.php Seneca County citizens can be proud of this state of the art facility and its staff.
